Park and Walk

'The Walking Bus'

In March 2004 the school completed its School Travel Plan. One of the actions from that plan was to set up a Walking Bus to help ease the congestion of the morning school run. The school's Council met in June and the children decided that they wanted to set up a Walking Bus. Parents were asked to sign up their children and also to volunteer to walk with the bus to school.

The Royal British Legion agreed that parents could park in their car park and the Walking Bus then walks down Link Way along Emblem Crescent through the footpath to the crossing outside the school.

Buses leave the car park each morning at 8.15 a.m., 8.25 a.m. and 8.35 a.m. led by parent volunteers.

Children who have signed up and use the walking bus are registered each day, asked to wear a florescent jacket and leave the car park at the allocated time crocodile fashion, guided by volunteer parents.

Walking buses are free, they save on motoring costs, ease congestion and pollution. The children enjoy the walk, make new friends and see things around them that they would miss if they were driven to school including a huge flock of geese flying overhead, this led to lots of discussions on different types of birds and where they could be seen.

We urgently need more volunteer parents to walk each morning, even one day a week would be helpful. Its 1500 steps from the car park to the school and back again this could be 1500 steps towards the 10,000 a day target for a healthier life. If you feel you are able to help please contact the school office and you will be asked to complete a form so the school can arrange vetting. You will be trained by the Leader of your group and receive an Operating Guide and a list of volunteers and their contact numbers.

Arborfield School is one of three schools in the District that has a Walking Bus we hope that through the school's forward thinking and agreement to set up this scheme that other schools will take up the challenge.

So please agree to help by volunteering and this in turn will allow your child to take advantage of the benefits this scheme can provide.
